Web Hosting FAQ: Technical Information
How
much technical support do you offer?
We
offer technical support via E-mail at support@coloradowebhosting.com,
fax and telephone during our normal business hours.
We
also offer after-hours technical support 24 hours a day, seven days
a week. Please note however that due to the limited number
of personnel working after-hours, response time will be longer than
during business hours.
We
prefer email because it gives us a chance to research your problem
if necessary, before giving you an answer, and also because we will
have a record of the problem and the solution.
We
have someone on-call on the weekend for network-related emergencies.
Which
HTML editor should I use to create my website?
Colorado
Web Hosting does not recommend one HTML editor over another and
there are a myriad of choices for you to use. Some of the
most popular include:
How
do I upload files to the webserver?
You
will use either an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program, FrontPage,
or a utility built into your HTML editor to upload. For more information,
please see our FTP Instructions.
How
do I upload my site using Microsoft FrontPage?
Microsoft
FrontPage includes its own means of transferring files. Please see
our FrontPage Quick Start.
How
do I get my home page to load automatically?
Name
your entry page "index.htm" or "index.html".
If both are present in the directory, the "index.html"
will load. Be sure to name everything in lowercase, not "INDEX.HTML".
Also, this file must to located in your home directory, which is
the first directory you see when accessing the Web server via FTP.
You may include an index file in subdirectories, and give the URL
as the path to the directory, as in http://www.coloradowebhosting.com/support
The default home page name on the NT server is default.htm.
If
I experience problems connecting via FTP, what can I do?
First
check your username and password. Your username must be typed in
lower case. The password must be typed exactly as shown; like most
things on a Unix server, it is case sensitive. Often, in a non-serif
font, I (capital eye), l (lowercase ell) , and 1 (the number one)
look very similar, or exactly the same, as is also the case with
0 (zero) and O (capital O).
Email
support@coloradowebhosting.com.
Please include any specific error messages you are getting. Sometimes
misconfigurations on the ISP's end can prevent you from logging
in. If this is the case, we can usually give you the information
necessary for your provider to resolve the problem.
What
file name types will my webserver accept?
Colorado
Web Hosting uses BSDI Unix for all virtual hosting, except for the
Windows NT plans. In the Unix operating system, all filenames are
case sensitive. This means that if you upload your files in upper
case letters, then your HTML's references must also match the case.
The easiest way would be to keep everything in lower case. Sometimes
files are received on the server in upper case even though they
were lower case on the user's computer. If this happens, check your
FTP software's manual or online help file for an option to "force
lowercase".
Also
do NOT put spaces in filenames .We suggest that you use file names
that are acceptable for DOS/Windows 3.x. Long file names with special
characters tend to cause more trouble than they are worth.
How
do I create sub-directories within my website?
We
recommend using the "create directory" feature in your
FTP client software. If it is not apparent how to do this, please
consult your manual or the online help file.
How
can I make sub-websites within my domain?
To
simulate a sub-Web site, you have to create a new directory (or
folder for MAC users) and then upload the main loading page (index.html)
to that directory. You can set up as many sub-Web sites as you wish.
Colorado Web Hosting only charges additional fees if you exceed
the allotted disk and data transfer limits that are established
in your pricing plan.
How
can I set permissions on files and directories?
Unix
uses the "chmod" command to set user permissions on files,
and to mark a file as executable. Most FTP software includes an
option to do this.
What
kind of server will my site be stored on?
The
technology in our inventory is continually changing. Please see
our network overview for more information. Colorado
Web Hosting Systems and Network Architecture.
How
can I set up my mail forwarding options?
By
default, ALL mail sent to your site (anything@domain.com) is set
up to automatically forward to the email address that was provided
when your account was set up.
You
can also set up specific aliases at the site that can be forwarded
to someone else's e-mail address. For example: sales@yourcompany.com
could be forwarded to bob@localprovider.com.
To set up specific aliases or to change your default email address
type: Go to your customer
control panel and follow the
instructions there.
How
do I configure POP email accounts?
POP
email accounts can be configured online in your account control
panel. Please see our separate POP
Email FAQ for more information.
Why
is my contact email address important?
Your
email address is important in two ways:
It
is the contact address for Network Solutions's record of your domain
and any communication from Network Solutions will come to this email
address. It is very important that Network Solutions be able to reach
you regarding your domain; not keeping your email address current
with Network Solutions may cause delays in changes you might wish to
make to your domain name record.
It
is the email address we use to contact our hosting clients with
important messages, and it is also the address through which
any changes to your account must be made.
How
do I register my site with search engines?
We
recommend that you register your Web site with the major search
engines by using SearchSubmit.
How
can I see the statistics for my site?
All
Colorado Web Hosting accounts have access to three statistical
analysis packages. These can be accessed from your customer control
panel
(http://www.yourdomain.com/cpanel). For additional details on
the statistics we provide, please see our Statistical
Information. |
