Web Hosting FAQ: Getting Started
How
does the Internet work?
The
Internet is a collection of computers around the world, connected
by a "backbone". Clients (the user's software) make data
requests of servers, and the data is transferred to the client.
What
is a domain name?
A domain
name is your address on the Internet. It is linked to a numerical
address, called an IP address. A domain name server is used to translate
a domain name into an IP addresses. Domain names consist of two
parts, the actual name, and the hierarchy to which it belongs. The
hierarchies available for public use are .com, .net, and .org. For
more information, please visit our Domain
Name Registration and Network Solutions page.
How
do I get my own domain name?
When
you sign up for an account at Colorado Web Hosting, all you need
to do is decide on the domain name you want, and check
its availability. We will take care of all the details for you.
If you'd like to know what the details are, please visit our Domain
Name Registration and Network Solutions page.
How
long will my domain name registration take?
Once
Network Solutions announces that your domain name registration has been approved,
it takes approximately 1-3 business days before it is active. All
Internet providers must update their records (DNS tables) to reflect
new site locations. This is called propagation. Total turnaround
on a new domain name is typically 3-5 business days.
Please
Note: Network Solutions considers a change in hosting services as a modification.
Domain modifications usually take longer than registering a new
domain, due to the fact that the current administrative or technical
contact for the domain must acknowledge the modification request.
Delays can also occur when your current provider does not approve
the transfer request from Network Solutions.
May
I register my own domain name?
The
domain name registration form asks for two nameservers, which must
be included in order for Network Solutions to register your domain name.
In addition, simply including the nameserver listings is not enough
- the domain name must actually be entered into the domain name
servers specified, in order for the domain name to be used in any
way. This change must be made by us.
All
clients who need additional domain names, for their existing site,
should send their requests to hosting@coloradowebhosting.com.
Additional domains cost $69 per domain, for entry into our nameservers,
plus Network Solutions's standard fees. No e-mail settings (forwarding or
aliases) will be provided for additional domains pointing to existing
sites. If e-mail is required, the client should set up a new hosting
account for the domain.
What
do I need to do before I can have a Web site at Colorado Web Hosting?
Since
Colorado Web Hosting deals with all the technical issues of registering
your domain name and setting up your server space initially, very
little. All you need to have is Internet Access from either a local
provider (see The List
for an ISP locating resource) or a national online service (such
as AOL, CompuServe, etc.). All of these services provide you with
an E-mail account and access to the Internet which includes WWW
access (to check your pages) and FTP, or File Transfer Protocol,
to upload your information to your Web site.
If
I can't design my own Web site, who can help me?
PC
Guy Consulting is our parent company and
they offer Web design services. Please see their Web site at http://www.pcguy.net
for more information.

as Usolicited Commerical E-Mail (UCE). Hosts who spam via e-mail
, USENET (newsgroups), etc. are not allowed on Colorado Web Hosting's
servers. You will recieve a warning after the first verifiable complaint.
If we receive additional complaints, your site will be removed and
your account will be cancelled. This is a ZERO TOLERATION policy.
Spamming is not allowed by an Colorado Web Hosting account holder.
Please see our Acceptable Use Agreement and Service Agreement for
more information.
Will
Colorado Web Hosting host "Adult Orientated" Web Sites?
Colorado
Web Hosting's policy is to NOT host "Adult Oriented" web sites.
There
are various legal and logistical reasons as to why we have decided
to instigate this policy, among others: adult sites typically generate
an enormous amount of traffic disproportionate to the amount of
useful information provided (although that is subject to debate).
On
the subject of legality, we are fully aware of the overturning of
the Communications Decency Act. We are pleased with the outcome,
but we still choose to NOT host adult web sites at this time.
Hosts
posting adult content to their web site will receive one warning
to remove the content. If the adult content is not removed from
the web site promptly, it will be shut down. Colorado Web Hosting
defines adult content as pornography. (Medical sites who use nudity
for demonstration or illustration purposes are satisfactory. Artistic
nudes, such as painting and photography are acceptable until the
site draws excessive bandwidth at which time we will provide a warning).
Will
Colorado Web Hosting host "MP3" Sites?
Due
to bandwidth problems in the past with "MP3" sites, and the borderline
legality of such sites, especially with regard to the Internet Service
Provider providing server space and potential copyright issues,
Colorado Web Hosting's policy is to NOT host "MP3" (or downloadable
music / video) web sites. Hosts with high bandwidth web sites such
as warez and mp3 sites, will be cancelled without warning.
Will
Colorado Web Hosting host "Warez" Sites?
Due
to bandwidth problems in the past with "warez" sites, and the borderline
legality of such sites, especially with regard to the Internet Service
Provider providing server space, Colorado Web Hostings's policy
is to NOT host "warez" (or pirated software) web sites. Hosts with
high bandwidth web sites such as warez and mp3 sites, will be cancelled
without warning. |
