2. How long does it take before my web site is indexed on the search engines and directories that I submitted to ?
Even though the SearchSubmit server immediately sends your Web page information to the server of the search engines and directories, it will take between one day and six weeks for your URL submission to become a listing. Usually, AltaVista and InfoSeek will take only a few days to index your page. However, most of the others will take a several week period. Such a delay between the date of submission and the date a submission becomes a listing is due to the extremely high number of submissions the most popular engines receive every day.

3. I have found my site, but I'm not listed very high.
There are many reasons that your site may not be showing up well in the search engines. Search engines send out "robots" or "spiders" that read the information contained within your page and determine your listing based on that information. Some of the things they look at are your title tag, page text, meta tags and alt tags. If your site does not contain the information that each search engine is looking for it will result in a poor listing within the search engines, or worse it could be overlooked entirely. Because of this we HIGHLY recommend implementing as many (if not all) of these elements as possible within the pages that you submit. These tips, including how to best use them can be found on our Search Engine Tips document.

4. I have not received any verification from the search engines and directories I have submitted to that my web page is indexed.
Search engines and directories will not send you any verification that your web page has been added to their database. Some will send you email confirmations in response to your submission and others will display a confirmation screen online at the time of your submission.  If you are not able to find your site in a search engine or directory, perhaps it is because of how you are searching for your site. It is best to search not by keyword, but by Web site address (URL) or Web site title. These pieces of information are more unique than keywords which means you will have an easier time verifying your listing.

5. I want to remove my URL from the different search engines and directories that I submitted to.
Unfortunately each search engine and directory has a different mechanism for doing this . Many of the spider-based search engines will periodically revisit the pages in its database in order to keep the information current. When a search engine revisits your page, it will re-index any new content added since the page was last indexed. If the search engine's spider cannot access the address, it assumes the link is dead or obsolete and will automatically remove the URL from its index. Other search engines will have "Delete URL" forms to fill out on their web site, or an email address which you can use to remove your URL from an index.

6. How will I know if my sites been listed?
Some of the directories will send you an email confirming your request. This is not a guarantee that you have been listed. The best way to confirm is to go to the search engine and search for your site. Note: It often takes a few weeks for a listing to make it into a search engine.

7. Does my listing in a search engine or directory expire?
Announcement sites such as What's New will post your site temporarily. Directories and search engines such as Yahoo and Lycos, are more "permanent".
